Rajinikanth’s film Darbar, despite earning Rs 250 crores, is a flop.
That Tamil superstar Rajinikanth-starrer Darbar did not do well at the box office as expected is now out in the open. Distributors of the movie, which hit more than 4, screens in the country on January 9, are now demanding compensation from Rajinikanth for the losses suffered by them. The distributors, who have been running from pillar to post to seek an appointment with Rajinikanth, say they have suffered losses to the tune of crores of rupees as collections in theatres were very poor. There were murmurs in tinseltown about the failure of the movie ever since it was released, but none of the distributors spoke about it publicly for about a month as they were not willing to antagonise the superstar. Rajinikanth is the only actor to have compensated distributors for their losses in the past — he paid huge sums of money to distributors after his movies Baba and Lingaa bombed at the box office. We paid the money that was quoted to us because we were told the movie has come out very well and it would be financially successful. Another distributor, who did not wish to be named, told DH that he alone had suffered losses to the tune of Rs 6 crore as collections were not as expected. Since distributors screen the movie on a percentage basis in theatres, their revenues depend upon the collections, he explained.
Made on a budget of Rs crore which includes Rs crore salary of Rajinikanth, Darbar has been adjudged a disaster despite collecting around Rs crore worldwide. Darbar stars Rajinikanth in the role of an angry cop who sets out to avenge his daughter. The film marked the maiden collaboration of Rajinikanth and filmmaker AR Murugadoss, who is best known for helming Ghajini and Kaththi. It marked the return of Rajinikanth in the role of a cop after 25 years. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander while Santosh Sivan has cranked the camera. Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is currently shooting for his next Tamil project with director Siva.
The Mumbai police force gets the shakeup it sorely needs in the form of Rajinikanth. Rajinikanth starts the movie as a rogue cop who threatens to bump off a government human rights official in his office. Events show that this candidate for prosecution has a back story, one that involves his beloved daughter Valli Nivetha Thomas and the cop-hating druglord Hari Suniel Shetty. Payback arrives in the form of the manbun-sporting Hari who, like most things in this movie, has a bark worse than his bite. In between, Aaditya romances the interior designer Lily Nayanthara , but the only female in his life who matters is his daughter. As ornamental and ephemeral as the flower after which she is named, Lily floats into view whenever Murugadoss remembers that his cast list extends beyond his hardworking hero. Yogi Babu is also around, providing the laughs when permitted.
